Antares

Antares is the name of a neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. It is located at a depth of almost 2.500 m at a distance of 40 km from the coast, near Toulon in Southern France.

Scientists are using Antares to search for neutrinos that are supposedly emitted by the most extreme objects in the universe, such as Active Galactic Nuclei, Gamma Ray Bursts and micro-Quasars. Antares also represents the first deep sea station in the Mediterranean Sea that is permanently monitored (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). This is of significant interest to various marine sciences, such as deep-sea biology and oceanography, and climate studies.
